Medical Training Therapy (MTT)
From the first loading after an injury all the way back to your sport: medical training therapy (MTT) is assessment-led training on professional equipment — at the Sport Performance Center in Kloten and at our Zurich West location, with strength testing and jump analysis instead of gut feeling.
Key facts
- First appointment usually within 48 hours
- Doctor-prescribed MTT is covered by basic health insurance (KVG); after an accident by accident insurance (UVG)
- MTT is part of the repertoire of our entire physiotherapy team
- Locations in Kloten and Zurich West · training at the Sport Performance Center
Typical complaints
- After surgery — ACL, shoulder, hip
- Sports injuries — muscle, tendon, joint
- Chronic complaints — back pain, tendinopathy
- Limited load tolerance — building up with light loads / BFR
What makes medical training therapy different
MTT is not an off-the-shelf programme but assessment-led training: we derive the load from your initial assessment and adjust it every few weeks. The stimulus has to be dosed correctly — high enough to build strength and load tolerance, controlled enough not to overload the injured tissue.
Train where the pros train
With us, MTT does not happen in a back room of the practice but in the main area of the Sport Performance Center in Kloten — on the same equipment that competitive athletes use. Strength testing, force plates and jump analysis make your progress visible: instead of deciding by feel, we see in black and white when you are ready for the next stage and when the load is sustainable again.
Building up even when you cannot load heavily yet
Early after surgery or with irritated tendons, heavy loads are often not possible. In that case we combine MTT with blood flow restriction training (BFR): a cuff moderately restricts blood outflow so the muscle responds even to light weights. This way, muscle mass can be maintained or built in Kloten and Zurich West without overloading the healing tissue — a bridge until you can do more again.
Frequently asked questions
What is medical training therapy (MTT)?
Medical training therapy is assessment-led, medically indicated training on equipment. From your initial assessment we derive dosed, progressive training stimuli that are adjusted every few weeks. The aim is to systematically build strength, mobility and load tolerance. Unlike open gym training, every load is matched to your findings and supervised by physiotherapists.
Who is MTT suitable for?
MTT is suitable after surgery (for example ACL, shoulder or hip), after sports injuries and for chronic complaints such as back pain or tendon irritation. It can support the transition from acute treatment back into everyday life, work and sport. Whether MTT is right for you is something we clarify during your initial assessment in Kloten or Zurich West.
What does MTT cost and does health insurance pay?
Doctor-prescribed medical training therapy is covered by basic health insurance (KVG). After an accident, accident insurance (UVG) covers the costs. For billing via insurance you need a doctor’s prescription; without a prescription, MTT is available at any time as a self-payer.
Do I already need to be able to train hard for MTT?
No. Especially early after surgery or with irritated tendons, heavy loads are often not possible. In that case we combine MTT with blood flow restriction training (BFR): a cuff moderately restricts blood outflow so the muscle responds even to light weights. This allows muscle mass to be maintained or built even with low loads.
