How Swiss health insurance works for physiotherapy
Coming from abroad, the Swiss system can be confusing — here is the short version:
- With a doctor’s prescription: basic health insurance (KVG) covers 9 sessions of physiotherapy; follow-up prescriptions are common. Any GP or specialist can issue one.
- After an accident: if you are employed in Switzerland, accident insurance (UVG) covers 100% of treatment — no prescription needed. We register the case with your insurer directly.
- Massage & complementary therapy: billed via supplementary insurance (EMR-recognised therapists) — check your plan, or ask us.
- Self-pay: you can always book without a prescription — often the fastest route.
What we treat
From sports injuries (knee, shoulder, ankle, muscle and tendon problems) to structured rehab before and after surgery (ACL, joint replacement, rotator cuff) and hands-on treatment methods like manual therapy, dry needling and medical massage. Reports for your doctor or insurer are prepared in German — we explain everything to you in English.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to speak German?
No. Booking, assessment, treatment and all explanations work in English. The online booking tool is currently in German — simply call or email us in English instead.
Do I need a referral to see a physiotherapist in Switzerland?
Only if you want basic health insurance to pay: then you need a doctor’s prescription (Verordnung). Without one, you can book any time as a self-payer. After a registered accident, no prescription is needed at all.
How quickly can I get an appointment?
Usually within 48 hours at both locations. Call Kloten on 044 803 91 19 or Zurich West on 044 814 23 20, or email receptionkloten@halle41.ch / receptionzuerich@halle41.ch.
Which location should I choose?
Whichever is easier for you — the team and methods are the same. Zurich West (Heinrichstrasse 251) is ideal if you work in the city; Kloten (Steinackerstrasse 41) has free parking, a kids‘ corner and the Sport Performance Center under one roof. All addresses: locations & contact.
