Spiroergometry (Breath-Gas Analysis)
Spiroergometry on the treadmill or ergometer. 60 minutes, breathing mask, graded exercise test. You walk out with your metabolic profile and concrete training zones — not a mountain of data. Included in the Endurance package (CHF 399) together with lactate testing and body composition — detailed analysis included. Available in Kloten and Zurich West.
At a glance
- Duration: 60 minutes, graded test incl. preparation
- Price: CHF 249 as a single test — included in the Endurance and All-In packages
- Suitability: from age 16; fitness for sport is a prerequisite
- You receive: PDF report + consultation — VO₂max, RER, thresholds, training zones
Seven parameters. A complete metabolic map.
- VO₂max (ml/kg/min) — maximum oxygen uptake, the gold standard of endurance capacity. Used for tracking training progress and comparing against your age group.
- RER (VCO₂/VO₂) — respiratory exchange ratio; shows whether you are burning fat or carbohydrates. Used for metabolic training control and nutrition strategy.
- Aerobic threshold (VT1) (watts, bpm) — the point where the effort becomes noticeable without getting hard. Basis for base-endurance training.
- Anaerobic threshold (VT2) (watts, bpm) — the point where your body produces lactate faster than it can clear it. Basis for race pace and threshold training.
- Maximum heart rate (bpm) — the highest heart rate measured at full effort. Individual, not «220 minus age». Used to define your zones.
- FatMax (watts) — part of your metabolic profile: the intensity at which fat oxidation is highest. Used for endurance building and weight management.
- Training zones — five individual zones, from recovery to maximum, covering your entire training plan.
What your PDF report contains
- All measured parameters, put in context against your age group
- Individual training zones with heart-rate and watt ranges
- A training plan for the next 8–12 weeks — in the detailed analysis (CHF 80, within 24 h; included in Run Technique, Endurance and All-In)
- A re-test recommendation with the option to compare results
Frequently asked before booking
Do I need a medical prescription for the breath-gas analysis?
No. Performance diagnostics is a self-pay service — no prescription needed, no insurance billing. Only if the testing is part of an ongoing course of therapy (e.g. return to sport after knee surgery) can it be billed via the prescription.
Which machine is used — treadmill or ergometer?
You choose based on your sport: treadmill for runners, ergometer for cyclists and triathletes. For cross-sport diagnostics we recommend the ergometer because results are easier to compare.
How should I prepare for the test?
Last training session at least 24 hours before, no intense workout the day before. Last larger meal 2–3 hours before the test. Drink enough, and bring sports clothing and your own shoes.
How does the Halle 41 breath-gas analysis differ from tests in sports shops?
We measure with a medically certified spiroergometry device, supervised by certified sports scientists. The analysis is a structured consultation with concrete training zones for the coming 8–12 weeks.
When does a re-test make sense?
After 8–12 weeks of structured training. The re-test shows objectively whether your VO₂max, thresholds or FatMax have shifted.
