Hip Arthroscopy Rehab

After arthroscopic FAI correction (cam/pincer) or labral repair, a clearly phased rehab pathway follows. We follow the operating clinic’s aftercare protocol, progress mobility and loading in stages — and bring you back to sport on a data basis with hip and adductor strength testing.

Key facts

Who this rehab is for

The rehab phases

Phase 1 — Protection phase

Weeks 0–6: partial weight-bearing on crutches (duration depends on the procedure — longer after a labral suture or cartilage surgery), rotation and flexion limits according to protocol, pain-free mobilisation, early activation of the hip muscles.

Phase 2 — Progressive loading

Weeks 6–10: weaning off crutches, full weight-bearing in daily life, expanding mobility, beginning strength work for the gluteal and trunk muscles.

Phase 3 — Strength and control

Months 2–4: progressive hip and adductor strength, single-leg stability, return-to-running progression, sport-like movement patterns.

Phase 4 — Return to sport

Months 4–6: cutting, sprinting, jumping — cleared on the basis of side-to-side strength comparison and cutting tests, not by the calendar.

What is different after a hip arthroscopy

After a hip arthroscopy the operated region is healing — after a labral repair the suture has to grow in, after an FAI correction the reshaped bone has to heal. That sets clear limits for end-range rotation, flexion and loading in the first weeks. We implement the clinic protocol 1:1 and work on what is genuinely possible in this phase: pain-free mobility within the allowed range, early activation of the gluteal and trunk muscles, clean gait training. Progressing the load too quickly risks irritation, capsular problems or a return of the impingement symptoms.

The operating clinic’s protocol applies

We work regularly with hip surgeons in the region and implement each clinic’s aftercare protocol consistently. Whether a pure cam/pincer resection, a labral repair or an additional capsular plication — the loading clearances, movement limits and crutch durations differ clearly. If anything is unclear, we speak directly with the surgical team.

What makes MTT different with us

Medical training therapy (MTT) does not happen in a back room but in the main area of our Sport Performance Center — with the same equipment professionals train on. For hip arthroscopy rehab this means equipment-based strength building for the gluteal, adductor and trunk muscles, isokinetic hip strength testing compared side to side, and cutting and jump tests on force plates. That way we decide on a data basis when you return to your sport — not on feel. Read more about our treatment methods.

Frequently asked questions

How long does rehab take after a hip arthroscopy?

Getting back to everyday life often takes 6–12 weeks; returning to pivoting or contact sport typically takes 4–6 months. After a labral repair the early phase is somewhat stricter than after a pure FAI resection. The exact duration depends on the procedure, your sport and how your strength develops.

Why do I have to use crutches and limit movements at first?

The first weeks protect the operated region: after a labral suture or capsular plication, end-range rotation and full weight-bearing too early would jeopardise healing. Crutches and movement limits are an active protective measure according to the clinic protocol — not a matter of comfort.

When can I do sport again?

A stationary bike without resistance is often allowed early on, cycling and cross-trainer after a few weeks, the return-to-running progression from months 2–3, and pivoting and contact sports after 4–6 months. Clearance is based on quantitative tests — hip and adductor strength compared side to side plus cutting and jump performance.

What about the groin or «athlete’s groin»?

FAI frequently comes with adductor and groin symptoms, which are sometimes addressed in the same operation. We build up adductor and trunk strength in a targeted way and monitor it objectively — here in particular, strength decides how robust your return will be.

Does health insurance cover the rehab?

With a doctor’s prescription, basic health insurance covers 9 sessions of 30 minutes; after hip surgery, follow-up prescriptions are common and we coordinate them with your referring doctor. After a documented sports accident, Swiss accident insurance (UVG) covers the costs without a prescription.

How is this different from conventional physiotherapy?

Medical training therapy (MTT) provides quantified load progression. For hip arthroscopy rehab this means equipment-based strength building for the gluteal and adductor muscles, isokinetic strength testing compared side to side, and cutting and jump tests on force plates. Your return to sport is based on data — not on the calendar.
