Sports, classic or medical massage — which suits you
Not every massage pursues the same goal. The classic massage focuses on relaxation and releasing muscle tension, the sports massage accompanies training and competition, and the medical massage is part of a treatment based on specific findings. The difference lies less in the techniques than in the objective. In Kloten and Zurich West we first clarify with you which form suits your needs before we treat.
Massage in recovery and rehab
A massage can reduce perceived muscle tension, improve body awareness and support recovery — that is well documented. What it does not do: it does not repair tendons and it does not replace structured training. That is why we use it deliberately as a complementary measure around training, competition and during rehabilitation phases.
Experienced hands — our massage team
Our massage therapists treat you at our practice, several of them with experience from professional sport — from ice hockey to cross-country skiing. Whether classic relaxation massage, deep-tissue massage or medical massage as part of your therapy: you can see who will treat you before you book. If you have an acute injury or unclear pain, we first check whether a massage is right for you or whether another treatment is a better fit.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between sports, classic and medical massage?
The classic massage aims at relaxation and releasing muscle tension. The sports massage accompanies training and competition and supports recovery. The medical massage is part of a treatment with specific findings and a defined treatment goal. The difference lies less in the hand techniques than in the objective — we clarify with you which form suits your needs.
Who can benefit from a massage?
A massage can be useful for muscle tension in the neck, back and shoulders, for recovery around training and competition, and as a complement during rehabilitation phases. It supports recovery and body awareness, but it does not replace structured training. With acute injuries, unclear sharp pain or larger bruises, a massage is not the right choice — in that case we assess the situation first.
Are the costs covered by health insurance?
Medical massage is billed via supplementary insurance — several of our massage therapists are EMR- or EFA-recognised for this. Massage is not covered by basic health insurance (KVG). Check your supplementary insurance for the relevant coverage and tell us when booking that you would like to bill via supplementary insurance — we will then schedule you with a recognised practitioner.
Does a massage replace physiotherapy?
No. A massage can lower perceived muscle tension and support recovery, but it does not repair tendons or fix structural weaknesses. We use it as a complementary measure — for specific complaints or after injuries, it is part of a physiotherapy treatment, not a substitute for it.
